Energy Efficiency

With the ever-increasing problems of pollution and the potentially disasterous results of rapid global-warming, the efficient use of energy is without doubt one of the most important aspects of our modern lives which needs very careful attention. You cannot ever be too energy-efficient, and what was acceptable 5 years ago is probably no-where near good enough today. Here I suggest a few ideas which may help in the battle - and more than likely save you money as well.

Intelligent Heating Controls

You switch the light off when you leave the room, but do you switch off the radiator?

Even if you have thermostatic radiator valves, most people don't turn them down every time the room is empty, or adjust the timer on their boiler every time their schedule changes. It's a bit of a fiddle, even for the most energy-conscious among us.

It's getting easier, though. There are several heating control systems on the market now that let you control your boiler from your smartphone, tablet or any web device. The Heat Genius heating controller goes one step further and also allows you to control individual radiators, allowing you to save up to 35% off your heating bill. It even has a fully automatic mode where it learns when you use each room (using motion detectors) and sets each radiator to come on at the right time!

I've been promoting energy-efficient lighting since 1980 when the first Phillips 'SL' low-energy light-bulbs became available. These bulbs cost around £5 in those days but would still pay for themselves several times over! Modern Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs ('CFL') are now even cheaper and more efficient such that the savings are irrefutable - as are the savings in energy. CFL's are nearly 5-times more efficient than the old tungsten-filament bulb.

More recently, advances in light-emitting diode ('LED') technology mean that these small light sources are now sufficiently efficient to make even the CFL look like an energy waster. What's more, there is virtually no reason why such a bulb should 'blow' giving quoted life expectencies in excess of 50,000 hours. Instal LED lights everywhere and you may never have to change a bulb again!
