The Steadfast Guide to Money

Saving Money

Some useful hints and tips

"Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves." This old saying has a ring of truth, but inflation has rather eroded the terms of reference. These days you need to look after the pennies and the pounds! The trick is, to look after the pennies when it's something that is low cost but frequently recurring (like phone calls for example), and to look after the pounds when it's a more major, infrequent event (such as a holiday). Don't take your eye off the ball though: Money is money - if you're buying something big (like a house) it's easy to start thinking in round thousands and forget what your actually spending. £500 is nothing compared to the cost of a house - but it is £500!

In this guide - when I've finished writing it - I hope to give you a wide range of hints and tips on saving money - at home, at work, and at play. I will divide the guide into those three categories, and work through each, starting with penny saving and moving through, roughly in order, to the pounds and hundreds of pounds. Many items will apply to more than one section so will be listed in each one as appropriate.

You are bound to find that some ideas seem good whilst others look like a waste of time. You need to interpret each suggestion according to your own situation, and either take it onboard, disregard it, or modify it as you see fit. There is no substitute for common sense - it's up to you to decide what's right for you. I can't do that for you.
