A welcome return to Torrington for 'The Rudes' with their brand new show, a darkly comic thriller with a surreal and exhilarating ending. It tells the story of a Jewish carver and his family trying to survive in the harsh world of early 1920's London. It is a little known fact that many of the beautiful and haunting carousel animals being produced for fairs and entertainment parks between 1875 and 1925 were carved by extraordinary Jewish carvers using ancient motifs from East European wooden synagogues, gravestone carving and the Polish Mizrah paper cutting tradition, who had been driven to England and America by the pogroms and had to adapt their skills to survive. Of course the play will as always be a piece of highly physical commedia dell'arte mixing slapstick with pathos, poetry and original music.
